Every trip deserves a detour.

You saved it. Then you drove straight past it.

Deatours taps you on the shoulder when you are near somewhere you meant to try.

How it works

Save it once, then forget it.

  1. Save a place

Search for somewhere you want to eat and save it. That is the setup, and it is the last time you have to think about it.

  2. Put your phone away

Nothing to open and nothing to check. iOS watches a circle around each place you're alerting on and wakes Deatours only when you cross into one.

  3. Get a tap when you are close

The notification names the place. It arrives with the app closed and your phone locked in your pocket.

The circle sizes itself to how fast you are going. A walker needs a shorter warning than somebody at highway speed, so Deatours reads the speed your phone already reports and picks the matching distance. Each one is yours to change.

A saved list is a pile of good intentions.

You saved those places because you meant to go. Then the moment passed, the list stayed shut, and the only time you remembered was driving home afterwards. Deatours reads the list for you, at the one moment it is any use: when you are close enough to turn.

What it will not do.

Three things, named up front, because finding them out later is worse.

  • Watch more than twenty places at once

That is a limit iOS puts on every app, not a choice Deatours made. Save as many as you like. The twenty nearest to you stay armed, and they swap as you travel.

  • Alert you on a permission that only runs on screen

Arrival alerts need the Always location permission, because the whole point is that the app is closed. Without it you still get live distances, and no alerts.

  • Find a new place with no signal

Searching is the one part that asks a server. The measuring and the alert itself happen on your phone, so a tunnel or a dead zone does not stop them.

Your location never leaves your phone.

No account, no analytics, no advertising. The distance to your saved places is measured on the device, and the alert is created there too, so there is no server that ever receives where you are. Two things do leave when you ask for them: the words you type into search, and the recording if you speak them instead.

Deatours is in final testing on iPhone. This page links to the listing the day it goes live, and the next time you pass somewhere you meant to try, you will know.
